A few days ago, the newspaper El País published in its Traveler's Guide section an extensive report entitled The eruption of volcanic wines from the Canary Islands signed by the journalist Pablo León .
The article outlines the reasons for the current moment of recognition and appreciation of Canarian wines with a history of more than five centuries of tradition.
Our winery director and president of the Association of Winegrowers and Winemakers of the Canary Islands (AVIBO), Juan Jesús Méndez, who was interviewed for the preparation of the article, points out that This archipelago is the only volcanic terroir in which old soil layers alternate with much younger ones, subjected to strong erosion, with plantations from sea level to almost 1,700 meters above sea level, and diverse climates. they are wines that offer a unique experience. They are proposals that surprise and leave the, many times, homogeneous globalized market.
The publication also highlights the history and winemaking philosophy of Bodegas Viñátigo. Juan Jesús Méndez is the fourth generation of viticulturists and some of the vineyards he cares for were already tended by his grandparents. “When I started, the varietal plurality of the islands caught my attention”, he comments in the article. There are studies that put them at more than 80: “About 40 do not exist anywhere else on Earth; they only survive here”, reveals Méndez. Remember that Juan Jesús Méndez investigated this genetic range in collaboration with the Viticulture and Oenology Station of Galicia and the Department of Molecular Biology of the University of Tarragona.
